On Hanukkah, we can greet one another with “Hanukkah sameach!” which means “Happy Hanukkah!”
I am teaching myself Hebrew… so when I see the Hebrew Letters חַג חֲנוּכָּה שַׂמֵחַ – I can see they don’t match up. Hebrew is right to left, so you read it in reverse.
The first word (most right) is right to left, CH et, G immel… ‘Chag’ which is ‘holiday’ or ‘festival’.
The next word is Hanukkah.
The last word starts with the letter that kind of looks like a candleabhrah/minora. That is S een, M ehm, CH eht, This is the word sameach or ‘happy’.
חַג חֲנוּכָּה שַׂמֵחַ direct translation is “Chag Hanukkah sameach” or Happy Hanukkah Holiday, however they say if you want to show off Hebrew skills say “Chag urim sameach” which means “Happy Festival of Lights.”
